The development of scales can increase the objectivity in a domain characterized by subjectivity. The increase in objectivity typically leads to improved decisions and enhances the effectiveness of an organization or an investigation. The issues associated with the use of paired comparisons to form interval scales are the focus of this report.

The Binding Energy of Diquark-Antidiquark System in Nanometer and Subnanometer Scales
In this paper, using Monte Carlo Fortran code, we have obtained the binding energies for three different systems of diquark–antidiquark in distances from 0.01 to 15 nm. In [0.1 - 15] nm interval, we made use of Coulomb potential because in this interval, strong interaction is negligible. We have compared the binding energies of the systems with one another. The results of these comparisons...
متن کاملInterval rating scales for children's dental anxiety and uncooperative behavior.
This report describes two rating scales, an Anxiety Scale and an Uncoopera rive Behavior Scale, developed to assess children’s responses to dental stress. The rating procedure is reliable, valid, and easily integrated into clinical or research activities. In the present study, the Method of Paired Comparisons was used to further validate the scales, and to establish interval scaling properties....
متن کاملEmpirical formula for creating error bars for the method of paired comparison
The method of paired comparison based on Thurstone’s case V of his law of comparative judgments is often used as a psychophysical method to derive interval scales of perceptual qualities in imaging applications. However, methods for determining confidence intervals and critical distances for significant differences have been elusive, leading some to abandon the simple analysis provided by Thurs...
متن کاملClinical grading and the effects of scaling.
In clinical practice, there has been a need to grade the magnitude or the severity of the functions and qualities that are assessed in the examination. It is popular to use a four-step grading scale to categorize the severity of clinical findings. The authors discuss clinical grading scales and their influence on the clinician's ability to detect change. These principles have been applied to gr...
متن کاملUnidimensional scaling of multidimensional facial expressions.
It is often possible to construct unidimensional scales of multidimensional stimuli. Thurstonian scaling theory predicts that the standard deviations of differences in unidimensional paired-comparisons scaling of such stimuli should covary with the qualitative similarity between the stimuli being compared. In a test of this prediction, 78 5s judged 11 facial expressions from the Lightfoot serie...
